Axmouth

Axmouth sits about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) inland on the estuary of the River Axe. A port since pre-Roman times, the people of Axmouth finally gave up the struggle to maintain the harbour mouth, as pebbles gradually accumulated to create a bar across the river mouth. Fine Tudor buildings testify to its former prosperity, and the town now serves as a base for walkers exploring the south-west coast long-distance footpath. One of the most interesting stretches of the path goes from Axmouth eastwards to Lyme Regis, a distance of 10 kilometers (6 miles). This part of the coast is rich in fossil remains left exposed after high tides and landslips. Just east of Axmouth, at Dow, a huge landslip occurred at Christmas 1839, and the gorge created by the slip is of great interest to geologists, naturalists, and bird-lovers.
